Shree Jagannath Temple: The uncontested soul of Puri, this 12th-century temple is a shrine to Lord Jagannath (a manifestation of Lord Vishnu), his brother Balabhadra, and sister Subhadra. Its imposing structure and spiritual energy are deep. Note: Non-Hindus are usually not allowed within the main temple, but you can get a good glimpse from the roof of a nearby Raghunandan Library.
Puri Beach (Golden Beach): It is this wide golden sand beach along the Bay of Bengal ideal for sunbathing, relaxation, and taking in the peaceful ocean views. It's also renowned for the sand artwork of internationally known artist Sudarsan Pattnaik. The beach is holy to many who go for a dip before worshiping at the temple.
Konark Sun Temple: Although roughly 35 km from Puri, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is an absolute must-see. Constructed in the 13th century, it is a majestic chariot-like temple dedicated to the Sun God, Surya, with delicately sculpted stone horses and wheels. It's an engineering wonder and a reflection of ancient Indian dexterity.
Chilika Lake: Asia's biggest brackish water lagoon, around an hour's drive from Puri. This enormous lake is a home for migratory birds in winter (October to February), and hence, it's paradise for bird lovers. Boat rides, Irrawaddy dolphins spotting (particularly at Satapada), and island visits such as Nalabana can be undertaken.
Gundicha Temple: Popularly known as the "Garden House of Jagannath," this is a temple connected to the annual festival Rath Yatra. Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra are taken here for a week-long stay during the festival. It's a serene temple with gardens all around it.
Swargadwar Beach: Extremely holy part of Puri Beach, Swargadwar is said to be "Gateway to Heaven" and a major cremation site. It is of high spiritual significance to pilgrims who carry out rituals for the dead here.
Raghurajpur Artist Village: This heritage crafts village is approximately 14 km from Puri and renowned for its traditional cloth-based scroll paintings, known as Pattachitra paintings. You will find artisans engaged in intricate paintings, stone carvings, wooden toys, and other handicrafts. It's a great spot to purchase genuine souvenirs and see local artwork.
Narendra Tank: One of the biggest and oldest sacred tanks in Puri, with scores of small temples around it. It is the focal point of most religious ceremonies, such as the Chandan Yatra festival, during which the gods are taken for a boat ride. A peaceful place to take an evening walk.
Alarnatha Temple (Brahmagiri): At a distance of around 25 km from Puri, this Vaishnava temple holds importance as Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is said to have worshipped here during the Anavasara time of Lord Jagannath (the two weeks when Jagannath idols are not on public display after Snana Yatra). Alarnath is visited by devotees at this time to get blessings.
Sudarshan Crafts Museum: Established by the world-renowned sand artist Sudarsan Pattnaik, this distinctive museum features sand art along with other traditional Odishan crafts such as Pattachitra, applique work, and carvings on stone. It provides an interesting glimpse into the state's artistic past.
