5 historical places in Uttar Pradesh

Below are 5 notable historical sites in Uttar Pradesh:

Taj Mahal, Agra: Although lovingly described as a symbol of love, the Taj Mahal is also a gargantuan monument of historical achievement. This jaw-dropping stunning white marble mausoleum was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan between the 17th century in memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Its stunning Indo-Islamic architecture, delicate carvings, and more refined inlay work make it a UNESCO World Heritage Site as well as one of the most iconic historical sites globally.

Agra Fort, Agra: The massive red sandstone fort complex was the main palace of the Mughal emperors until 1638. Emperor Akbar built it between 1565, and subsequent rulers like Shah Jahan embellished it further. Agra Fort is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is a "walled city" with numerous palaces, halls, and mosques with Rajput and Mughal combined architectural style. The most significant structures inside are the Diwan-i-Aam, Diwan-i-Khas, Sheesh Mahal, and Moti Masjid.

Fatehpur Sikri, Agra: Fatehpur Sikri is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a 16th-century city built by Emperor Akbar, which was a Mughal capital for a brief period (1571-1585). The well-preserved red sandstone city has breathtaking monuments including the Buland Darwaza (the highest gateway in the world), Jama Masjid, Panch Mahal, and Jodha Bai's Palace. This is a reflection of Akbar's architectural vision and a fascinating glimpse into Mughal imperial life.

Sarnath, Varanasi: This is the world's most significant Buddhist pilgrimage place. Here, Lord Buddha delivered his very first sermon after enlightenment, instructing his "Eightfold Path." Most significant historical structures are the Dhamek Stupa, a massive cylindrical stupa built around 500 CE, and the remains of old monasteries and other structures. The Ashoka Pillar, though broken, still stands at its location, its famous Lion Capital now preserved in the Sarnath Archaeological Museum, which serves as India's national emblem.

Bara Imambara, Lucknow: Constructed by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784 in Lucknow, this grand building is a brilliant example of Awadhi architecture and was constructed so that employment could be provided to the masses during a famine. It has the largest arched building in the world without the use of wooden beams in the main hall. It further houses the Bhool Bhulaiya, a complex network of corridors, and the Asfi Mosque.
